Flood Update for September 18, 2008

Cleaning chairs

Cleaning chairs

Dear beloved brothers and sisters,

It is September 18th today. I tell you this in case you forgot what date it is. This date is more than a date, it is a day that reminds us of the big tragedy we knew four years ago when Hurricane Jeanne devastated the city and left more than 3,000 dead and another unbelievable amount of people missing. Yes, today we would have a ceremony somewhere to remember the event. Last year, in one of the local authority’s speech, he vowed that we should work so that nothing like this happened again. Hmm, a couple weeks short of 4 years something worse happened, Hanna. We ask you to pray for the people who are making decisions for the city, both Haitians and foreigners. Pray that they do things for the wellbeing of the city and the country. Four years!

Yesterday, I did not have the privilege to write to you all. It was a full day. We had two major priorities for the day. First, unearth the chairs from the junior Church so that they can be cleaned. We did that. Brother Elson Jean Pierre, who is the leader of the children, led the effort. We had a fun time. We had adults and kids from the junior Church who came to help. I went in the last leg of the work. We took all the chairs out using the wheelbarrow that we bought in Port-au-Prince last Monday. We bought some Bibles to distribute to our people who have lost their Bibles in the Hurricane. After transporting the chairs we ate together. The wife of one of our deacons cooked for us. This morning as I am writing they are washing the chairs.

The second major thing we did was distribute rice and beans. We delivered them to the people in their homes. We had the packaging done in 15 different places. It was done quickly. It was done safely. So far we have not had any people invading our locations because they are private homes where our members live. Those who have not completed their job of delivery will complete it today. Tomorrow we will send the people to l’Estere to buy more rice and beans so that we can reach more people in the distribution.

Those I have met and who have already received their food have expressed their heartfelt thanks. My voice and theirs join together to thank you all who gave to bring smiles to many faces in different homes. God will repay you for that. They are grateful to you as much as I am.

In this message please find some pictures of the evolution of the recovery. The first distribution was made in cash. The second one was made of just rice and beans. Between yesteday and today, we will distribute 1.5 tons of rice and 500-600 hundred Kg of beans. Brother Moses went to Port-au-Prince this morning and will come back with boxes/cases of spaghetti.

The downside of distributing the food in people’s homes is that the pictures will not be as sensational as if they were in line suffering. But I know those of you who gave only want the wellness of the people and the glory for God. We love you and we appreciate all you do.

Your brother because of the sacrifice of HIS SON,

Salonique Adolphe
