Little: So they thought!

Dear brothers ands sisters,

Greetings to you in His name!

One of the rare miracles reported by all four gospels is the feeding of the 5000 men + women and children. John reports that the five loaves and the two fish belonged to a boy. It is possible the mother of that young boy did not want him to go hungry, so she packed him his meal.

Andrew spotted the boy. So when Jesus said to the disciples to feed the crowd, Andrew said to Him, there is a boy here who has five loaves and two fish. Very little for a crowd of this size, isn’t it? Andrew assumed the boy would be generous and he was. But that does not solve the problem. Knowing so, Andrew stated, “What good is that with all this mob?” (John 6:9, Living Bible). It was more like a mob than a crowd with 5000 hungry men. There might have been more women than men in the crowd, and what about the youngters? So five loaves and two fish was almost a joke for a mob like that one. Little, so the disciples might have thought. You know the rest of the story. Therefore hand to Jesus the best “little” you have and stay back and watch you will see wonders.

I arrived in the United States for the first time at the end of November, 1997. I started college in the Spring of 1998. Before I even arrived in the US some churches were already sponsoring my education, thus Living Water before Living Water. None of those churches would be called big churches according to men’s way of labeling things. Some would have a very good attendance if the had 30 people in attendance. These chuches set aside their dimes and dollars to facilitate the process of my coming to the US for training. They might have thought their generous act was little. However God took their best “little” and saved many souls with it.

Allow me to name a few of those Churches.

Meadow Brook Christian Church is one of them. This Church is located in the heart of Kirksville, MO. There are great saints there. They enjoyed watching my numbers changing when I stepped over the scale in the course of a short period of time. Yes, they did. They were extremely good to me. I thank God for Paul and Dee McCune, Mikey Hays, and many others.

There is also First Christian Church of Waynesville. My friends Jeff and Elizabeth Oedewaldt introduced me to that church. The church has been a faithful supporter to this day. They take an active part in the sponsorship program. At this church the Lord has giants like Dave and Lillie Teufel, Hazel Griffith among others. These people are blessings to me and Living Water.

I don’t want to bore you, but I need to mention First Christian Church of Memphis. Wow this Church is God sent. They not only supported my education, but there was a time when they bought my plane ticket so that i could come to Haiti to spend Christmas. Oooh! Oooh! Leaving behind the cold, snowy MO was a huge blessing in itself! I don’t even need to mention how huge the blessing was to spend Christmas in Haiti (Caribbean after all) with my family. Thanks God for heroes like Bob Carney, Ann Luther, Doug and Maureen Robinson to name a few.

Thank God for New Testament Church in Camdenton, MO. I remember brother Ned Reed, who has been with the Lord for a number of years now.

I thank God for what Medaryville Christian Church (IN) has done for me from day one. I cannot forget brother Keith Hilton and his wife Betty. Brother Keith is now with the Lord, but he left for me an example of his positive, attitude even in the most difficult situation. His pears, his popcorn remained in my mind. He never missed an opportunity to sign a check on my behalf.

What about Portage Christian Church (IN)? PCC has put smiles on many faces in Haiti. They have blessed us. They had a saint there who never said “this can’t be done.” That was Arlie Mathena. They also have Kate Maisel whose hospitality is proverbial.

There is also Iroquois Valley Christian Church with saints like Betty Yerion, Jean Parker, Calvin and Angie, Jim and Darlene Williams. Some of those people have moved to other Churches, but they attended there in my years in college.

And the list goes on …

There are individuals who have been huge blessings for us from day one: Phil and Phoebe Byers, Frank Cousin, Janet Farmer, Troy Titus, David and Martha Reynolds, Chad Summa and all our D-Group, Nate and Kelly Hart, Al Byars. Brother Byars has been with the Lord for a few years now. I have to stop here, because there is no way I can name them all.

You see all those churches and individuals would have labeled what they have done for me in my early days as little. Yes! But they entrusted their best “little” to God. They saw a phone call, a birthday card, a letter, a check, the use of home phone to make long distance calls to Haiti … as little. Even when they signed a big check, in their humility, they would still see it as little.

Now let’s see some of the things that God has done with their best “little”:

  • * Several new churches have been planted in the last few years
  • * Over a dozen churches who had already existed have benefited directly from our ministry
  • * Hundreds of kids are having a quality education, either next to free or free
  • * Hundreds of meals are distributed on a daily basis when school is in session
  • * Several young people are now receiving a college education
  • * Many people have had their medical bills taken care of
  • * Hundreds of young people receive professional training
  • * Thousands of people receive relatively good care in time of crisis
  • * Over a hundred people have a reliable job
  • * The best is that hundreds of people have been coming to the Lord, leaving the kingdom of darkness to come to the Kingdom of Light

Because these Churches and people gave their best “little” God is making something big out of them. Should we join the song writer and rightly say: “Little is much when God is in it.” Thanks to all of you who join those churches and individuals to give your best “littles” to God so that He can do wonders with them. I praise My God for mom and dad Fred and Jan Green who crazily love the Lord and His service and who love us deeply. We thank God because of them.

Brothers and sisters, whatever the Lord puts in your mind to do or to give, please don’t think of it as too little. Andrew could have said to the boy, “please give me your five loaves and two fish so that Jesus could feed the mob.” The boy would have looked at the mob, then at Andrew and laughed.

In Him,
